Lloyd’s Register (LR) has strengthened its collaboration with leading Korean shipyards and owners through a series of agreements announced at Posidonia 2026.

The agreements include an Approval in Principle (AiP) granted to DH Shipbuilding for an 88,000 cubic metre dual-fuel very large gas carrier (VLGC), alongside a number of MoUs focused on next-generation vessel concepts.

These include a 22,000 cubic metre LNG bunker vessel with K Shipbuilding and a Suezmax tanker design with DH Shipbuilding incorporating a passive air lubrication system (ALS), reflecting growing interest in operational efficiency technologies and alternative fuel infrastructure.

LR also announced a number of other partnerships with Korean partners at Posidonia, including a joint development project (JDP) exploring an advanced small modular reactor (SMR) installation on a pure car and truck carrier (PCTC) with Hyundai Heavy Industries, Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (KSOE), Hyundai Glovis, G- Marine Service and the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI).

Additionally, LR signed an MOU with Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) and Capital Clean Energy Carriers Corp for a floating data centre (FDC) design, a MoU with K Shipbuilding, bound4blue and the Liberian International Ship & Corporate Registry (LISCR) to jointly develop a 50,000 dwt MR tanker incorporating wind-assisted propulsion systems (WAPS), and is working with D Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (KSOE) and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) to develop a new generation of LNG carrier designs using hybrid electric propulsion.

An AiP was also awarded to HD Hyundai Samho for a container ship design standard supporting NAV1 compliance.
