Hybrid fleets, combining crewed, autonomous and digitally enabled systems, are becoming the new normal. The challenge is no longer simply introducing new technology, but ensuring diverse platforms and systems operate safely, securely and effectively together throughout their service life. LR helps you navigate this complex shift, supporting the transition to the hybrid and autonomous fleets of the future.
Lloyd’s Register Naval is helping to transform the way forward-thinking navies operate, integrating autonomous systems and digital technologies into hybrid naval capabilities.
Your trusted force multiplier
Naval capability is no longer measured by the size of your fleet, but by how it is employed. LR Naval delivers independent technical assurance and advisory services to navies, shipyards and prime contractors, helping them keep pace as naval technology evolves.
Our expertise covers surface ships, submarines and a growing fleet of autonomous vessels. We drive the safe introduction of AI, connectivity and cyber-security into naval programmes, while helping clients adopt advanced sensing technologies as they move from concept into practice.
LR Naval’s credentials Over the last 30 years, more than 400 naval vessels have been built to LR Class, including 190 to LR's Naval Ship Rules across 19 navies. More than 100 vessels are maintained in Class today across 13 navies, including the Royal Navy, Royal Australian Navy and Royal Canadian Navy. LR was the first classification society to publish dedicated Naval Ship Rules, continuously refined over 25 years across a diverse range of vessel types and leading navies worldwide. As a charter member and current Secretariat of the International Naval Safety Association (INSA), LR continues to actively shape the standards the industry operates to.
Because LR is independent, our advice is focused on each fleet's needs. With specialists across six continents and a dedicated Naval Centre of Expertise, we give clients the confidence to make bold programme decisions backed by the latest technical insight. Our global network enables us to share lessons learned across navies and programmes worldwide, while delivering local support that reflects each client's operational, regulatory and industrial context.
We don’t just certify, we advise, anticipate and adapt alongside you, acting as your guide as the naval world changes. We employ our Naval Ship Rules, Submarine Assurance Framework, Unmanned Systems Code and Grey Boat Code, together with INSA’s Naval Ship Code and Naval Submarine Code to help you move complex programmes forward. When emerging capability moves beyond conventional standards, we develop tailored goal-based assurance approaches that deliver the outcomes you require.
Our Advisory team helps shape the next generation of naval systems, from defining specifications and evaluating new technology to developing safety cases for autonomous platforms. Advisory is delivered under managed arrangements that protect the independence of our certification and verification activities, so customers benefit from our technical insight during planning while the assurance provided on completion remains impartial and defensible.
